OrbitPDF uses AES-256 by default, which is the strongest cipher defined in the PDF 2.0 specification (ISO 32000-2). You can switch to AES-128 in the Advanced options for compatibility with older readers.

The open password is what readers must enter to view the file. The owner password grants full control over the document, including the ability to override the permissions you set. If you leave the owner password blank, OrbitPDF generates one automatically.

Yes. When protecting a PDF, you can independently allow or deny printing, copying text, editing content, and adding annotations. Readers who open the file with the open password will be restricted by these permissions.

No. The Unlock mode requires you to know the current password. OrbitPDF does not brute-force, crack, or bypass encryption — that would undermine the security of legitimately protected documents.

Never. All encryption and decryption runs entirely in your browser. Your file stays on your device throughout the entire process.

Some PDFs allow opening without a password but restrict editing or copying behind an owner password. Try entering the owner password in Unlock mode. If you do not know it, OrbitPDF cannot remove those restrictions.
